On the heels of one of its partners going live in Indiana, Unibet Sportsbook may not be far behind. Indiana will soon become the third US state for the Kindred Group’s flagship online sports wagering product.
On May 13, the Indiana Gaming Commission approved a license application for Unibet, operating under Horseshoe Hammond Casino’s master license.
Connecting the dots between Caesars and the Unibet sportsbook
Caesars doesn’t operate or own Unibet. It does operate several brick-and-mortar gambling facilities in Indiana, such as Horseshoe Hammond and Caesars Southern Indiana.
Indiana law doesn’t allow for standalone online sportsbooks. All online wagering must be tethered to one of the state’s physical casinos or off-track betting sites.
Caesars provided that component for the Kindred Group, which operates Unibet. Although the Kindred Group is based in Europe, it has solid experience with offering sports wagering online in the United States.
Kindred started offering markets for sports bettors in New Jersey online last September. In November, it expanded across the Pennsylvania border, its second US jurisdiction.
Unibet also operates online casino products in those states. Should Indiana ever legalize such forms of gambling, it could easily expand its offerings to include that vertical.
Unibet now has its license in Indiana but there is no official word about when the app and website will actually start accepting wagers. The time to do so could be on the horizon.
Why summer 2020 could be one to remember for Indiana’s sportsbooks
As much as the last two months have been a famine for IN online betting apps, the coming summer months could be a feast. Normally, summer months are downtime for sportsbooks. That could change depending on the return of popular North American sports leagues, however.
The latest rumored proposals for the conclusion of the 2020 NBA and NHL seasons along with the start of the 2020 MLB season have June and July dead in their sights. If that is indeed the case, the clamor for wagering upon these sports could be impressive.
Early returns from May point to this possibility. Wagering on the restart of the NASCAR season surpassed the handle that is normally bet on the Daytona 500, according to PointsBet.
NASCAR betting wasn’t an outlier. FanDuel shared that it took twice the handle for the Taylormade Driving Relief 2020, a golf game that pit Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy against Ricky Fowler and Matthew Wolff, as compared to what it usually sees for a PGA event.
BetMGM shared that the week of May 11-17 has been its best since the pandemic broke out globally. UFC wagering was the hottest ticket for that sportsbook.
Although all these sportsbooks operate in more jurisdictions than simply Indiana, Hoosier State bettors definitely played a part in all the success. If Unibet can go live in IN before MLB starts and/or the NBA and NHL return, it is poised to get in on what could be a rebound sports summer.
